Stitched up!!!

Postby Phil Newsham » Thursday 15 December 2011, 15:10

It goes like this..

Got a call this morning (random 'customer'), will I collect from (company name) and deliver to a unit, on an industrial estate in Liverpool. I asked the name of the company it was going to, "it's just unit 26" was the reply (1st alarm bell rings!)

Gave her the price, she agreed, I asked where the invoice was going to, "they'll pay in cash at the other end" she said. Initial thought, oh ok, great! (But then 2nd alarm bell rings!) :suspicious:

Gets to the collection point, asks one of the lads for the collection for Liverpool, he looks puzzled and says he'll go find out. He comes back 5 mins later, says it'll be ready in 10 mins, they are just finishing it off.

20 minutes later, there's a copper at either side of me, one holding each arm saying "come with us!"

Questioned me for about half hour, and to cut a long story short, the scallies arranging these collections have called couriers up and down the land, asking them to pick up from A and take to B and not paying the companies who's goods have been collected, and the old bill thought I was one of their runners

Does make me wonder what would have happened if I did make it to 'unit 26'. They would have probably emptied my van and give me a crack for my trouble if I'd dared to ask for my cash!

Nature of the job I guess, but I will be very wary of random callers in future! :suspicious:

It's an old one, you should search the forums.
NEVER NEVER take payment in cash at other end!
They phish account details, take company details and google them for phone number, ring number on google!

It did strike me as very suspicious, a cash in hand job from a complete stranger. Still learning! :)

Just let your common sense prevail, you knew something was wrong, don't ignore it!

But the annoying thing, why don't they let you continue to unit 26 with some cops in the back

Or an unmarked police van arrives at unit 26, but of course that would be to hard for the boys in blue, and would mean them doing some work.

In Liverpool I presume you mean? I think it was L31? The industrial area I was supposed to go was in Sefton.

When on route the phone would have rung with a change of address, or meet my van in a car park.

Yeah since the carry on with me I've been warned about last minute changes of delivery point. Still maybe lots of things to learn in the world of the OD, but I'm a quick learner :D

Another one for laptops in London is someone approaching you at the front door of a building as you are carrying one in, "Ahh that's for me, I've been hanging on for it......"

I wouldn't accept a c.o.d job, I'd direct them to my website and ask them to pay via PayPal with their credit card and will accept the job once that's cleared, if they quibble about it I would ask them to go somewhere else.

I'm happy to do cash jobs... Just very careful and if it feels dodgy, I'll refuse it..
But don't assume all cash jobs are bad. There's a local trader that I've done a couple of jobs for that always prefers to pay cash on delivery. He says it's easier than banking it...
